Even if you keep up with routine and preventative Mercedes-Benz service appointments, you might occasionally need to jump-start your battery. Dead batteries are relatively common — especially here in the Midwest where we see extreme hot and cold temperatures throughout the year — but fortunately, jump-starting is a simple process. Here are some tips from the pros at Mercedes-Benz of Orland Park.
Signs Your Car Battery is Struggling or Dead
There are a variety of symptoms that your car might exhibit if your battery is struggling or completely dead. For example, if the engine won’t turn over, or if you hear a clicking sound when you fire up the ignition, it could mean you need a jump start. Additional signs to watch for are an illuminated dashboard warning light, dim headlights, and electrical components like the radio and windshield wipers not working.
Steps to Jump Starting Your Battery
First, find your owner’s manual for the recommended step-by-step instructions to jump-start your particular Mercedes-Benz model. Most car batteries can be jump-started by following these steps:
- Have a friend or another driver park their working car next to yours and turn off both vehicles.
- Connect the jumper cables to each battery. First, attach the red (positive) clamp to the dead battery, then attach the other red clamp to the positive post on the working battery.
- Connect the black (negative) clamp to the donor car, then attach the opposite black clamp to an unpainted metal piece of your vehicle (such as the engine block or frame).
- Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Try to start your dead car and let it run for a few minutes. If it doesn’t start right away, give it a few more minutes before calling roadside assistance.
- Disconnect the jumper cables (black first, then red). Keep your vehicle running for at least 15 minutes, including drive time.
